Founded in 2019, the Halifax Gay Men’s Chorus (HGMC) is a fellowship of lower voiced singers from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. HGMC’s mission is “to present high quality and exciting musical performances, create a safe and supporting social environment, and be ambassadors for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Halifax and throughout Nova Scotia.”
HGMC regularly performs to sold-out audiences and has a membership of over 80 singing and non-singing members.
In May 2023, HGMC co-hosted the national Unison festival, welcoming 600 2SLGBTQIA+ singers from all over Canada to Halifax. In 2024, HGMC was the opening performance in PEI’s Under the Spire music festival. HGMC was a 2024 East Coast Music Awards (ECMA) nominee for Choral Recording of the Year and 2025 ECMA nominee for Vocal Release of the Year. HGMC has won Best Community Choir, 2023, 2024, and 2025, in The Coast’s Best of Halifax series.
Safer Space Statement
The Halifax Gay Men’s Chorus is dedicated to providing a space that is accessible, inclusive, and free from oppression, harassment, and discrimination. In this space, we will treat each other with respect and dignity, regardless of age, race, gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, levels of ability, and all our other diverse identities. Every member of the chorus has a responsibility to uphold these values and to support HGMC’s equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation and accessibility initiatives.
